“Hello, there.” -Obi Wan Kenobi
Hello, there. My name is Thomas. I’m a recent college grad from New Orleans looking to carve a niche for himself in Los Angeles with a degree in theater and performance and minor in comedy writing and performance. As a result, I’ve got a lot of opinions when it comes to movies, tv shows, and surprise (not really) video games among other things. I’ve always been hesitant to share my opinions with the world for fear of not being good enough or smart enough. It wasn’t until within the last year that I made the jump from quietly rating things on IMDb to Letterboxd where I, more often than not, give movies a score and then hide behind it with a quip of some sort. While this works to some degree, I found myself online talking to friends or at home talking to family about my in depth thoughts on each individual piece, which as you, dear reader, may imagine gets quite tiring for them especially when at the time of this writing there are a hefty twenty one tv shows that I have as being currently watched in my Serialized bank.
So, over the weekend someone suggested to me that I start writing about my thoughts on these things seriously. Maybe there is an audience out there for it and maybe, just maybe I can help facilitate dialogue on some rather different pieces. I must admit, my letterboxd most popular section rarely aligns with what I am actually watching. What made me decide to take the leap into blogging oblivion was the realization that whenever I rate something that none of my peers have watched or even heard of, there are still plenty of reviews all over letterboxd and serialized. People watch stuff, and while that may sound painfully obvious, it gets tough to remember sometimes that people like to share their opinions on art and discuss with others who have witnessed the pieces in their entirety. It gets difficult explaining to my family the ins and outs and implications of my most recently viewed episode of The Sopranos when they have never even seen a trailer for it. On the contrary, discussing the implications of Arthur Hiller’s The In-Laws with my mom was a delightful experience. This comes from the fact that we both sat down and watched it. It wasn’t a one sided dialogue, but a back and forth, and that is what I hope to achieve with this blog. I hope that the things that I write about resonate with you, reader, and that the conversation doesn’t end with my opinion, but that you pick up the torch and continue the conversation or that perhaps you feel inspired to pick up the piece of media and come back to me with your own thoughts.
There is so much amazing work out there, and I hold a firm belief that all movies, tv shows, music, video games, and more are worth checking out simply because they have stories to tell and that we as consumers have a job to hear and see them. Every week, I’ll get back to you here with my thoughts on whatever it is that I’ve most recently watched, and I hope that you’ll do the same. I’ll try and keep my posts varied by medium, but I must admit I watch a lot of movies. I look forward to continuing my journey through this world more full of art than it ever has been, and I hope that you, dear reader, will come along and join me.
